VERY RARE English Peter Rabbit Sterling Silver Baby Teething Rattle 1933 HM VGC
This is the very best vintage nearly antique! Baby teether/rattle that I have collected over the years. I have never seen a Peter Rabbit one older than 1933! Marks: This baby rattle/teether toy was made by W. Collins of Birmingham, England, and is fully Hallmarked for Birmingham and 1933, and has the maker’s mark WHC. Dimensions: This baby teether is quite large – it has a total length of just under 8 inches (20cm) inc. The teething ring has a diameter of 2 inches (5cm). It has a total weight of 31 grams. This is a most attractive and well crafted baby rattle toy, that has survived over 80+ years extremely well. It would make a fabulous addition to any Vintage/Antique Baby Rattle Collection, or a Peter Rabbit Beatrix Potter Collection! VERY RARE English Peter Rabbit Sterling Silver Baby Teething Rattle 1933 HM VGC. VERY RARE Antique Vintage English Genuine Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit Sterling Silver Rattle Baby Teether Teething Ring Hall Marked England 1933 Fabulous Condition! I have never seen a Peter Rabbit one older than 1933, and I’ve only ever seen one other example similar to this 1933 one – and it had its teething ring missing! The rattle has a wonderfully detailed figure of Peter Rabbit as its feature. He is beautifully crafted in hallmarked English Sterling Silver, and is in first class order. The handle of the teether is made on genuine solid mother of pearl that has a carved design and scalloped edges. It too is in first class order. Suspended from Peter Rabbit’s ears is the original teething ring, which is often missing, or damaged from use! It is attached by its original hallmarked sterling link and is in very good order, given its age. I suspect it has never been used. There are certainly no tooth marks. There is no bell or’pea’ inside Peter Rabbit – the’rattle’ effect is gained from waggling the ring, while holding the mother of pearl handle, against the hollow silver figure of Peter Rabbit. The teething ring is made of bone, or some sort of 1930s synthetic material simulating bone. It is not plastic. The teething ring has discoloured over 86 years, but I have not attempted to clean it. It could possibly be repolished with emery by a suitably experienced jeweller, but my preference is always to leave items as is. Peter Rabbit stories were written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter from the 1890s, and’The Story of Peter Rabbit’ was first published in 1902. He has been a children’s favourite ever since. In fact, Peter Rabbit was the first character to be fully’merchandised’.. ! It was Beatrix Potters own idea. In 1903, seeing the popularity of’The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, she began to sew a doll version. She patented the doll, too, which makes Peter Rabbit the oldest licensed character. It was followed by Peter Rabbit games, figurines, wallpaper, blankets, and tea sets. The merchandising helped make Peter Rabbit into a popular icon and turned The World of Beatrix Potter into one of the biggest literature-based licensing organizations of its day. It also bears the mark BCM/PRIAUR – this is the mark for an English company that manufactured small silver items such as this, and were linked to WH Collins in Birmingham. Condition : This vintage baby teething rattle is in excellent vintage condition. I do not think it has been used. The are no dents or dings or holes to the hollow silver. Any dark spots on photos are just the detail of the Rabbit figure. Peter Rabbit is portrayed here with his hands paws! ? Tucked into the pockets of his characteristic blue buttoned jacket. This makes for some areas of shade and light in the silver that are hard to photograph, but I can confirm there are definitely no dents. It has lovely vintage patina on both sides, with the inevitable tiny scratches in the silver from use. I have not cleaned it. The Mother of Pearl handle is in perfect order. It sits snugly in its silver attachment below Peter Rabbit , and is still perfectly straight. It would make a fabulous addition to any Vintage/Antique Baby Rattle Collection, or a Peter Rabbit. All items are carefully packed. Available on request, but it is very expensive. Please contact me within 30 days of receiving your item, to arrange an immediate return. Be in original condition.
